SF Glens power up Micro Soccer and Recreational Soccer programs, appoint Matt Favela as new Grassroots Program Director SAN FRANCISCO (January 24, 2024) -- The San Francisco Glens Soccer Club announced today that the club has named Matt Favela as the Grassroots Program Director that includes both Micro and Recreational soccer.
As a USSF-C licensed coach, former college player and San Francisco Glens U-19 girls coach, Matt has the knowledge, experience and enthusiasm to lead a critical program that is at the foundation of the club. “We are extremely excited for Matt to lead our Grassroots program,” said SF Glens Executive Director Mike McNeill. “We have heard the broader Glens and San Francisco communities and acknowledge that there is room for growth and improvement for the programs designed for early-stage players. Matt has a proven track record in this space and will help us to offer a top-class program.” Player development is central to the mission of the San Francisco Glens and it starts with providing the right environment for all the younger kids in our community while they experiment with the sport via the Micro or Recreational soccer programs. The SF Glens Grassroots program is specifically designed for players in Pre-K through 3rd grade and aims to introduce the game, teach basic soccer skills, develop motor skills, improve social interaction and inspire players to love the sport. Favela has spent his professional career at the intersection of coaching, teaching and operations, focusing on soccer at all levels: youth, high school and competitive soccer. “It’s an honor and a big responsibility to take on this position with the SF Glens, and I’m excited to work with Mike, our Board, our staff, our players, coaches, families and partners in our vibrant community,” Favela said. “I’m an advocate of comprehensive youth development for players in our community, and I can’t wait to continue to expand that within our club. "Now that I am raising my son, I have an even deeper motivation to build the best youth soccer environment for children; the goal is for them to have a memorable, fun soccer experience and an overall healthy relationship with sport and exercise,” Favela added. “I see my role extending to the broader San Francisco soccer community and I am looking forward to working with other coaches, parents and schools." Over the past years, the SF Glens have developed many top youth soccer players. This was the result of starting these kids early, teaching them to love playing together, controlling the ball, and building up confidence through fun and engaging repetition.
