SAN FRANCISCO (April 28, 2022) — The San Francisco Glens are proud to announce that San Francisco State women’s assistant coach Jessica Hewins will be the club’s new Girls Director of Coaching.
“We are extremely excited to welcome Jessica into our club and community,” said Glens executive director Mike McNeill. “We acknowledge that there is significant room for growth in our girls’ program and with her leadership and philosophy, I believe that Jessica is perfect to help us reach our goals.”
A longtime coach with a breadth of experience at both the college and youth level, Hewins plans to make her mark on a club on the rise in Northern California.
“I really believe in a holistic approach to coaching and the culture of a club,” Hewins said. “To start, I think the biggest thing is building trust within the coaches and the players, so I want to be out there aat practices and games … getting to meet [them] and then getting a really good idea of where we can build upon.”
Before arriving at SF State in July 2021, the Sacramento area native spent two seasons as an assistant at Menlo College. She also has been coaching at the highest levels of youth soccer for over a decade at Palo Alto SC, Davis Legacy, and Union Sacramento FC, namely in the Girls Academy and as the Under-17 State coach in NorCal Premier’s PDP program. Hewins obtained her United Soccer Coaches National License in 2014 and her USSF C License four years later.
“I love coaching at the older age groups in college because it’s a little more focused on the game and the aspects of competitiveness, the tactics, the scouting, recruiting, and watching film,” she said. “But I really have a passion for the youth level in building players’ characters as they grow up and make a difference in the world.”
Hewins also brings a decorated playing resume with her to the Glens. A three-time all-conference midfielder at Humboldt State after starting her college career at Sacramento State, Hewins later competed in the USL-W League for the New York Magic and in the WPSL for Elk Grove Pride. This lifetime of playing and coaching has molded her outlook on the type of players she’s looking for to build the Glens’ program.
“I’m really big on core values. It’s respect, humility, mindset, and a passion for the game,” she said. “I want to see a player that maybe they’re not the best skilled, maybe they’re not the most physical, but they have the want to work hard, to get better, to love the game and be a part of our community here.”
Competitive tryouts for our SF Glens girls teams are April 30-May 2. Check out schedules, locations, and how to register at sfglensacademy.com/tryouts.
